The Power of Optimism

Life is a journey we all embark on, full of meandering paths often laden with obstacles. Depending on one’s outlook these obstacles can either be viewed upon as stumbling blocks or stepping stones. What can often distort our vision of the road ahead is our tendency to look back as we are walking. We focus on the stumbling blocks we encountered and scars incurred along the way. The deeper the scar, the longer we stare at it.

Maintaining this focus and mindset, the road ahead suddenly begins to look daunting. It is at this point that we begin to encounter the biggest and most silent stumbling block of all; fear. Our judgement and view of what is ahead becomes influenced by past experiences. We become fearful of incurring more injuries and getting hurt. By doing so, however, we overlook one very important lesson; that along our journey there had also been stepping stones. Without realising, we had been stepping on them all along in order to reach where we are now.

Each stumbling block had infact been a stepping stone in disguise. Stepping stones which enabled increased knowledge, wisdom and strength. Life is not a smooth road; nobody promised it was. But the road that is looked on with hope is more pleasant to the traveller than the road looked on with despair, even though they both lead to the same destination. Sky is NOT the limit because there is simply NO LIMIT.

Maintaining a positive mental attitude when it seems your world is falling apart requires mental toughness and strength. If you can learn to live life as an optimist as opposed to a pessimist there’s no denying that it will be more fulfilling. Start today by shifting your perspective on past and present events, despite how bad they may seem. You may have lost your job, be going through a divorce or your house may have burnt down BUT you are still alive. You cannot change your past but you can change your future by setting the right foundations today. The change literally starts with you. Love yourself, conquer your fears and be optimistic. Happy go-getting!
